Lighthouse History
The following account is shared from the heart and testimony of our Founder, Pastor D.C. Tisdale:
Lighthouse C.O.G.I.C. was birthed through faith, obedience, and a clear calling from God.
While serving as a member of St. James C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of the late Pastor D.H. Gray, Pastor Tisdale faithfully served as a deacon for twenty years. In June of 1992, the Lord called him into the ministry, marking the beginning of a new journey.
In July 1997, the Lord placed a strong calling on his heart to pastor His people. Though the question arose, “Where is my church?”, there was a deep assurance that God already had a plan and a place prepared.
That same month, he shared this calling with Brother Arthur Williamson, who joyfully received the news, expressing that he had been waiting for such a moment. That very evening, the first church meeting was held. Brother Williamson was appointed Chairman, and his wife, the late and beloved Idella Williamson, served as acting secretary.
The early days of Lighthouse C.O.G.I.C. were marked by determination and trust in God’s provision. The congregation began searching for both a temporary place of worship and land to build a permanent home.
During this time, the late Pastor Elvis Fuller of Toone Mission Church graciously opened his doors, allowing the congregation to hold services after his own Sunday services had concluded. This act of kindness provided a place for worship during the church’s earliest days.
Soon after, Pastor Roman Pirtle informed Pastor Tisdale about a small building in Whiteville that had previously been used for worship. The building, formerly known as Johnson’s Café and owned by Mrs. Evon Monia, was rented for $100 per month and became the church’s next place of gathering.
As the ministry continued to grow, God made a way for a permanent location. In August 1997, land became available on Douglas Loop Road, owned by Mr. Pat Mann, Jr. Without hesitation, steps were taken in faith, and two acres were purchased to establish what would become the home of Lighthouse C.O.G.I.C.
From humble beginnings to a growing ministry, Lighthouse C.O.G.I.C. stands today as a testimony of God’s faithfulness, provision, and the power of saying “yes” to His call.
